Listen to Police Scanners Online
We all have that inquisitive instinct sometimes, we hear sirens and say to ourselves “I wonder what is going on?” Some of us have a Uniden police scanner at home or one of the other major brands of scanners. They come from many companies; Uniden, GRE, and RadioShack to name a few in the competition. Myself, I have one going all the time, a Uniden BCD996T or a BCD996XT and sometimes the expected phone calls from friends and family “Hey whats going on, you listening to the scanner?” Not much happens where I am, but when it does people become destined to find out.
So what if you don’t have a scanner or you do but you want to hear whats going on in the next City, County, or even across the country? Maybe your area is now broadcasting in digital, a trunking system, or your scanner does not cover the necessary frequencies. You turn to online scanner streams. My #1 place to turn to is Radio Reference which is ‘Your complete reference source’ for communications. In their Live Audio section you will find something to listen to, maybe even your local police and fire. The live audio section is supported by everyday users of scanner users like me. They take a spare scanner or even their only scanner, hook it to their computer and run software provided by Radio Reference and the audio is uploaded to them and in turn, you can tune in too and listen live.
I like to tune in on major city’s or even to an area where there is breaking news happening to listen first hand. This way I can get the news before it’s on the news. Drop in on the Top 50 Audio Feeds and just browse the top Agencies being listened too, I find these to be the busiest especially Los Angeles which is always non stop 24 hours a day. Getting connected is really simple. I select which one I want to listen too, select ‘Web Player’ (I use the Web Player option most of the time) in the drop down box and click the speaker icon where it says listen.
You can also listen with your mobile phone if it is supported. Android, Blackberry, and iPhone are all supported with various software. I suggest for the Android devices an app called Scanner Radio and Scanner Radio Pro for iPhone, iPod, and iPads. Here is a list of other Mobile Scanner Apps.
Radio Reference is a great source for your other scanner needs too. You looking to purchase new scanner but you are unsure which one works for your area, just sign up for the forums and there is many people in there ready and waiting to answer your questions.
