Having a scanner that can decode DMR/MotoTRBO is a must with the rise in DMR ham repeaters and some areas, police and fire. Both Uniden and Whister have upgraded the firmware for a few of their scanner models allowing them to receive this popular digital mode.
(I try to keep the links updated with the lowest price I can currently find)
Here is a list of the current available models that decode DMR/MotoTRBO.
- Uniden BCD996P2, BCD325P2, BCD436HP, and BCD536HP now have optional upgrades allowing them to receive DMR, MotoTRBO Connect Plus, MotoTRBO Capacity Plus, and DMR Tier 3 systems. The DMR upgrade is $60 via Uniden after purchasing the scanner.
- Whistler TRX-1 and TRX-2 come with DMR decode enables at no extra cost. The caveat is they do cost about $100 more than their Uniden counterparts.
I personally think the LCD displays on the Uniden models, particularly the BCD996P2, are much easier to read as they have a better layout and UI than the Whistler line.
